Single-molecule electron diffraction imaging with charge replacement

چکیده
We investigate the possibility of nondestructive electron diffraction imaging of a single molecule to determine its structure. The molecular specimen will be held on a free-standing sheet of graphene. Due to the high conductivity of graphene, electrons lost by ionization would be rapidly replaced, enabling repeated nondestructive interrogation. Limits of resolution, maximum particle size and required electron flux are assessed.

Hydrogen Adsorption on (5,0) and (3,3) Na-decorated BNNTs
The storage capacity of hydrogen on Na-decorated born nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) is investigated by using density functional theory within Quantum Espresso and Gaussian 09. The results obtained predict that a single Na atom tends to occupy above the central region of the hexagonal rings in (5,0) and (3,3) BNNT structures with a binding energy of -2.67 and -4.28 eV/Na-atom respectively. When a si...
متن کاملElimination of X-Ray Diffraction through Stimulated X-Ray Transmission.
X-ray diffractive imaging with laterally coherent x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses is increasingly utilized to obtain ultrafast snapshots of matter. Here we report the amazing disappearance of single-shot charge and magnetic diffraction patterns recorded with resonantly tuned, narrow bandwidth XFEL pulses. Our experimental results reveal the exquisite sensitivity of single-shot charge an...
متن کاملOrienting single-molecule diffraction patterns from XFELs using heavy-metal explosion fragments
Single-molecule imaging is one of the main target areas of X-ray free-electron lasers. It relies on the possibility of orienting the large number of low-counting-statistics 2D diffraction patterns taken at random orientations of identical replicas of the sample. This is a difficult process and the low statistics limits the usability of orientation methods and ultimately it could prevent single-...

متن کاملThe structure of DNA by direct imaging
The structure of DNA was determined in 1953 by x-ray fiber diffraction. Several attempts have been made to obtain a direct image of DNA with alternative techniques. The direct image is intended to allow a quantitative evaluation of all relevant characteristic lengths present in a molecule. A direct image of DNA, which is different from diffraction in the reciprocal space, is difficult to obtain...
